How might we create a playful way
Let kids be more willing to get treatment and ease painful feelings in the process

NO CHILD’S LIFE SHOUD BE
TRAGICALLY IMPAIRED BY A BURN

Quaniquem is a hospital in Chile that specializes in treating children with burns and is our target for this project. We spent 2 weeks in the hospital to study and research the interior of the hospital, and wanted to design a way to alleviate the pain of the children who are treated for burns.

Children are always taken to a general hospital in the first instance after being burned, but they are always traumatized by inadequate treatment and the shock of the burns, and carry these traumas with them into the Quaniquem

Interview with the Psychologist

Engaging the children in drawing pictures will offer us valuable insights into their emotional states and thoughts.
If there was a dollhouse designed to raise awareness about burn-related risks, that will effectively preventing children from experiencing further harm.

Interview with the Nurse

Despite our treatments are not very painful, the children often experience fear due to their past traumas
The treatment often last up to an hour and the children are always bored during the session.

Goal

Letting kids experience the healing tree story to support each step of COANIQUEM’s holistic treatment

Strategies

By skillfully blending the interplay of light, a harmonious color scheme, and the warm embrace of locally sourced natural wood materials, we forge a connection to nature.

Concepts

Animal Shaped Lighting

In COANIQUEM, each room features enchanting animal lighting toys that turn treatments into joyful adventures. Guided by sound, these whimsical companions dispel fears and ignite joy, creating a delightful healing journey for brave children.

Story Board

Our storyboard features a mood selector, illuminated surface, COANIQUEM story backdrop, and drawing area. Children choose mood, background, and express themselves with markers or a jelly puzzle. COANIQUEM’s young champions craft tales, fostering self-expression and imaginative exploration.

To alleviate the apprehension children may feel during treatment, we've introduced a delightful peacock light designed to serve as a captivating distraction throughout their hour-long sessions. This whimsical creation features light strips embedded in the peacock's belly, cleverly illuminating its exterior pattern to mimic the vibrant display of an open peacock's feathers. Operated by an internal motor, the strips gracefully rotate, producing a mesmerizing spinning effect, while synchronized movements with the room's music further enhance the therapeutic ambiance.

SOCIAL WORKER’S ROOM
PSYCHOLOGY ROOM

Story Board

The storyboard serves a dual purpose: easing children's internal trauma related to burns while providing valuable insights for psychologists and social workers to tailor more effective treatment plans. Children can actively engage in their emotional well-being by rotating the top of the house to select their daily mood, then selecting preferred storyboards to foster their own creative expressions. These storyboards, inspired by Coaniquem's narratives promoting positive healing, empower children to embark on their better therapeutic journeys. Crafted from locally accessible wooden materials, this product is designed for ease of production within Chilean hospitals, ensuring widespread availability.

Mouse Light and Penguin Light

Crafted with the endearing characters from Coaniquem's stories as the focal point, this toy light offers an interactive experience for children. By responding to claps, it seamlessly changes colors, while synchronizing with music, enabling dynamic light movements. This not only enhances children's engagement but also facilitates active participation in the enchanting world of Coaniquem's stories, fostering a therapeutic and immersive environment.
